Sparklea Nail Polish – Harry Potter Collection

Hi all.

One of my beloved nail sisters Leanne Ling aka @leasnails, has recently rebranded and reopened her nail polish shop!

Lea originally started selling polish under the name Charming Tale Polish. She was famous for her mythical named creations. I actually first met Lea around the time she released her last collection before she closed down for a break. I did get my hands on some of the goodies she sold before she closed but I never got the chance to become a proper fan.

I was delighted when Lea mentioned she would be coming back again with a new brand name and a fabulous new collection.

January 2017, Sparklea Nail Polish went on sale for the first time!

The debut collection was themed around one of Lea’s passions, Harry Potter.

As far as fandoms go, Potterheads (Harry Potter fans) are pretty vast. I know quite a few super fans who love the franchise and then there are the odd ones like myself who like the franchise but not enough to count myself a super fan.

I did however love this collection and had to get them all.

First up in this collection is Gryffindor.

Sparklea Nail Polish – Gryffindor

You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart

Named the house of Gryffindor after Godric Gryffindor, its original founder. Gryffindor house values bravery, nerve and chivalry. The official flag colours are scarlet and gold. Gryffindor is a big part of the Harry Potter series, namely due to who was in the house. The obvious one being Harry Potter. Albus Dumbledore was also a member of Gryffindor house during his school years.

Gryffindor is a deep maroon red polish filled with lots of little gold glitters. Completely opaque in 2 normal coats and it dries reasonably well too. The above photo is without any topcoat so you can see the shiny finish. A really lovely maroon colour.

Next up there’s Hufflepuff,

Sparklea Nail Polish – Hufflepuff

You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil

Named the house of Hufflepuff after the founder, Helga Hufflepuff. The house values hard work, dedication, patience, loyalty and fair play. The official flag colours are yellow and black. Famous members of Hufflepuff house are Professor Pomona Sprout, Newt Scamander and Artemisia Lufkin (The first female minister for magic)

I’m actually a proud member of Hufflepuff House myself, thanks to the infamous Sorting Hat on Pottermore.

I was a little disappointed originally when I found out I was part of Huffleuff house as the colour yellow is not my favourite shade to wear. I tend to find it makes my skin tone look either green or orange. Neither shades look particularly healthy or nice on me!

I purchased Hufflepuff with the intent of rehoming it eventually. Then when it arrived I was so shocked at how bright and shiny it was. It’s almost gold in some lights. A really beautiful polish that I then used to create my Lego Bat Man design, which you can view here.

Needless to say I shall not be rehoming it now. It’s a gorgeous yellow colour and I’ll wear it with Hufflepuff pride!

Next up there is Slytherin.

Sparklea Nail Polish – Slytherin

Or perhaps in Slytherin
You’ll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends

Named Slytherin house after the founder, Salazar Slytherin. Slytherin values ambition, cunning and resourcefulness. The official flag colours are emerald green and silver. This house is also mentioned a lot within the Harry Potter stories as his evil nemesis Lord Voldemort originates from this house. Other famous Slytherin members are Draco Malfoy, Dolores Umbridge and Tom Riddle.

It’s green. So my inner green hatred demanded I wouldn’t like this one. As with Hufflepuff, I planned to rehome it once I had reviewed it. I’m pleased to say that although it isn’t my favourite colour ever, this shade is subtle enough to pass. I wont be wearing it everyday, but it will certainly be used again. Plus being a holographic polish gives it a little boost in my opinion. The sparkle keeps me occupied enough to not notice the green too much.

The last house polish in the collection is of course Ravenclaw.

Sparklea Nail Polish – Ravenclaw

Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
if you’ve a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind

Named Ravenclaw house after its original founder, Rowena Ravenclaw. Ravenclaw house values intelligence, knowledge and wit. The official flag colours are blue and bronze. In the Harry Potter series we are introduced to the Grey Lady, the ghostly daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw. We also meet Luna Lovegood, another member of Ravenclaw house. Other famous members also include Gilderoy Lockheart and Garrick Ollivander (the owner of Ollivander’s wand shop in Diagon Alley.)

I love a good blue and this is one of them. A lovely deep blue shade with lots of lovely holographic glitter. Opaque in 2 coats. The above image is shown with no top coat applied. The formula is smooth enough to achieve perfect application and look at the sheen! It’s a great polish.

As well as the house polishes Lea also released 2 other shades as part of the Harry Potter collection.

Next up is Floo Powder.

Sparklea Nail Polish – Floo Powder

Floo Powder is a glittery powder used by magical beings to travel quickly around the Floo network. The powder was invented by Ignitia Wildsmith in the 13th century. When using Floo powder it is important that you speak clearly, keep your elbows tucked in, shut your eyes and don’t panic.

Harry Potter incorrectly uses Floo Powder to travel to Diagon Alley with the Weasley family and actually ends up in Knockturn Alley, the darker more sinister version of Diagon Alley.

Floo Powder is a soft purple crème polish filled with multi coloured glitter flakes and scattered holographic glitter too. A really pretty sparkly number. Much like the other shades in this collection the formula is great and it paints on perfectly.

Lastly from the collection is Mirror of Erised.

Sparklea Nail Polish – Mirror of Erised

‘Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi’

The Mirror of Erised is an ancient, ornate mirror. It shows the most desperate desire of a person’s heart. Albus Dumbledore explains how the mirror has been known to drive men to madness staring into the depths at their greatest desire. Harry Potter uses the Mirror of Erised to find the Philosopher’s Stone in his first stand off against Lord Voldemort.

Mirror of Erised is a clear polish with multi coloured flakes and scattered gold and holographic glitter. A proper sparkly number. This is 3 painted coats so lazy girls rejoice, no sponging needed. The photo above is without top coat.

All of these goodies are available in 2 sizes. I purchased the mini bottles which were £3.50 for 5mls. There was also a 10ml option for £6 each.

Sadly the collection is currently out of stock on the Sparklea Nail Polish website. However Lea will be restocking these shades soon, and she has so many other projects in the mix. I suggest you go give Lea a follow over at @sparkleanailpolish to keep an eye on the goodies she makes. She is a great maker and a wonderful nail artist which you can see on her nail art account @leasnails.

Thank you so much for reading.

Kat x
